I'm John, a user experience designer based in Sydney.
How I got started in design
When I was kid, I used to love playing with Lego. I loved the feeling I would get when I would think of something to build and then see it come to life. My professional background is in software development. I had the same feeling building software that I had when I was building Lego, all those years ago. Working in design has allowed me to do more of the thing I love, namely solving problems. Design offers an opportunity to be there at the beginning of a project and to see it through to the end. I always get satisfaction from the process that turns an idea into something useful.
What I've been working on
Previously I've built and maintained financial reporting systems, implemented mobile service software, designed and built mobile warehouse management software, and product managed cloud-based content delivery, publication and authentication systems.
More recently, as an experience designer, I've lead the design for a complex chronic disease application and I was the lead designer for partner integrations into a cloud-based clinical software application.
What I'm curious about
I'm very curious about the future.
The future is equal parts exciting and scary. One thing is certain: design needs to be intentional and the work of designers will be crucial to ensuring that the needs of people are always our top priority.
